MY Addons

i have a fairly decent gaming desktop system, but i still like to keep my UI trimmed down due to some choppy performance issues and my rather neurotic independence from "mind altering drugs". i do not like to be left vulnerable and helpless in the event that unecessary things become unavailable (major patch day, anyone?!) in any aspect of my life. also, i strongly believe that if you really must rely on such things, how good of a player/person can you really be?

with that said, here is my list:

spammenot - this is not being updated at wowui probably because of the link to wowace (the developers’ testing website) and the easy one-click update function that allows the addons to be automatically posted to the curse website from there. *grumbles* in any case, this is one addon i simply cannot live without because of my raging temper and hatred towards people and their inane acronym and 1337speak prattle. this blocks and automatically reports spam and certain words and keeps me from getting banned as a result of being exposed to constant chat annoyances from people in the trade channel while still allowing me to see the "business" that the channel was intended for. i lack the mental power switch that disengages me from emotional situations and stops me from expressing myself.

questhelper - essential for the PvE quester. many thanks to zorbathehut for reviving and maintaining this project. just accept a quest and this addon with point you in the right direction.

mapster - this map addon along with tomtom (waypoints) is an adequate alternative to ckknight’s basic cartographer v2 addon which seems to be falling to the wayside of his many other projects. both work with questhelper in pointing you to the right direction for your questing objectives. solo PvE questing is the bulk of what i do so i find this combination to be most invaulable to my gaming experience.

inflight - i use this because of its flight confirmation option which allows you to confirm where you want to go before you actually take off. this is helpful because some of the selection points on the map are very close together and they are not labelled unless you mouse over them. before i found this addon, i was frequently flying to the wrong places. the timer bar/notification is also a nice feature because it lets you know exactly how much downtime you will have while in flight in most cases.

x-perl unit frames - did somebody say… sparkles?! actually, this is convenient for my healing classes because it allows movement of the frames to any location on the screen. i like to have my party frames close to bottom center where my casting buttons are when i need to keep an eye on healing and buffing my party members. it is rare that i am ever in a group, but it is still convenient. i do not use this on my slower notebook computer.

titan panel - this one is more of a convenience. in fact, i do not use this addon when playing on my notebook computer, but it is nice to have everything visible and accessible on my screen with just a simple glance.

note: i refuse to get anything from the curse gaming network unless i absolutely must.

Square and Nintendo’s Super Love Child

October 31, 2008 by admin · Comment

Once upon a time in the halcyon days of the Super Nintendo, Square and Nintendo combined in a rare collaboration of talent to produce one of my favorite games: Super Mario RPG.  Since it was recently released on the Wii’s Virtual Console, I decided it was a good time to bring to light some of the reasons I think it was so great.

Super Mario RPG was the granddaddy roleplaying game that launched the franchise and brought us such gems as the Paper Mario games (which I’ve played the hell out of).  It’s a little different from the later games, as it’s an isometric top-down view with 3D characters, but the technical details aren’t really important in this.  The fact that this game introduced Mario and his friends to a different genre as well as some of the greatest moments in my videogame history makes this game rocket up my list.  I will fully admit that my feelings for this game are colored deeply by nostalgia and the age in which I first played it.  However, I believe that it is definitely worth purchasing and playing once again on the VC.

The story goes like this: Mario is once again forced to rescue his princess from the clutches of Bowser, who is apparently typecast as a villain.  During the expected thrashing that Bowser is receiving, catastrophe strikes in the form of a giant sword crashing down from the heavens.  Mario, Princess Toadstool (she wasn’t called Peach outside of Japan until the release of Super Mario 64), and Bowser are cast to the four corners of the small world that they call home, and Mario sets out to figure out what the heck is going on.

The world is colorful, and the characters that are added from outside Mario Bros. lore are well done.  Mallow is an annoying little ball of fluff, but he has an excellent back story and a good character arc.  I tended to not use him all that much in my party, however - I’m more of a crash-and-bash kind of guy in games like this.  Geno is an enigma, and he is cool as the other side of the pillow.  I think that they could have done a better job fleshing out his background, though.  Both of these characters could very easily be updated for something like a Paper Mario game, I believe - though they may be owned by Square.

All in all, the story is stellar, the gameplay is basic but solid, and the quirks and oddities in the weapons, items and enemies laid the foundation for the terrific Paper Mario series to come.  If you have a Wii, Super Mario RPG is a very good pick up for the Virtual Console.  If you don’t, I’m sure you can dig up a SNES emulator and ROM somewhere out there on the Internet.
