Switch Review: Dlink DGS-2205

ff00e_switchesd Switch Review: Dlink DGS-2205

This is my basic review of the DLINK DGS-2205 8 port 1000BaseT networking switch.

I purchased three of them for my LAN Party to upgrade my really old 16-port 10/100 switch that has served me for so long.

What came in the box:

The switch
The power supply
A DVD on how to install the switch….

Construction: The switch itself is very light but seems to be constructed to be able to hold up to a few beatings. If someone attempts to rob the LAN I will not have as much confidence in bludgeoning someone to death as I would with my old 10/100 metal cased switch.

Setup/Looks: The switch is setup with ports in back and lights upfront, two lights per port. The first light indicates port speed, green for 1000, yellow for 100/10 the other blinks for activity. Pretty straight forward and I could tell with ease which port was active from across the room.

Heat: Even with a night of fragging and massive file transfers they stayed nice and cool. Around 3am when the file transfer for movies, I checked them for heat and they were warm to the touch, just over room temp I would guess. Which was a surprise as it was pretty warm in the garage for most of the LAN. This is an improvement to my old 16 port switch that would get hot to the touch when worked hard, and it had an active fan.

Speed: VERY FAST! I was pulling a 2 gig file across the network that had to transition two different switches till it hit my computer and it was moving so fast I downloaded it twice thinking it did not complete because of the speed. I would guess around 2-3 mins for a 2 gig transfer. I was busy fragging so did not do any timing of transfer speeds, but we had a file server running and everyone was pulling large files extremely fast with no slowdowns, it took approximately 10-15 mins to distribute new games (including install time) to people so we all could play.

Noise: Dead silent, no fans on the switch themselves but they stayed nice and cool, so unlike my old 10/100 switch with it’s noisy ass 40mm fan you could sleep in the same room with these switches.

Over all I think it is a solid buy for 40 bucks a pop. My only concern is the plastic case but it is pretty thick case so hopefully I can get years of fragging out of them.

I recommend them to any LAN party or person looking for a good bang for your buck switch.

Jesse comments on “Aspiring Academics” - Part 1

April 29, 2009 by admin · Comment

The recent AAG text Aspiring Academics: A Resource Book for Graduate Students and Early Career Faculty edited by Solem, Foote and Monk (2009) offers a great deal of information in just a few pages (212 pages). Clearly as a book aimed at academics it references other academic materials on the various topics. As I read through the text on the flight back from Las Vegas I thought of several online and ‘real world’ examples and resources that might be useful to readers. This post covers section 1 of the book, chapters 1-5.

Chapter 1 Time Management
-GTD is the acronym for the philosophy that spread through tech and business sectors. David Allen’s ‘getting things done’ is an effective way to plan your activities and projects. No one does GTD more amusingly than merlin Mann of 43 folders.

Chapter 2 Career Planning
-This is a significant area of importance and due to the restrictions of the text’s topic looks at only the academic issues. But with the market as it is and the reality of changing interests through the grad school we have to look at jobs in government and the private sector as well. There several jobs that ate outside of academia that allow for research, teaching and service just like that plumb tenure track job that you could have gone after.

Chapter 3 Collegial relationships
- In most jobs if you are not a team player you are no longer a player at all, but academia allows you a certain protection from your own arrogance and self-absorption (it’s ok, it is the reason we thought we could go for a doctorite in the first place). There are several sites out there that talk about working with others, but let’s face it…just sit down and watch Dr Phil to know how to get along with others.

Chapter 4 Balancing your life
-Apparently after you graduate you are allowed to have a personal life…I will believe it when I see it! Until then I will jump back to GTD which is intended to help you effectively do the things you have to do so that you have time to do the things you want to do.

Chapter 5 Tenure and beyond
-Here I will point you to the new Quake Live or Yahoo! Games because that is the only help online. Tenure is a bizarre process, but it is the goal for many. All you can hope to do is decompress occassionally to maintain your sanity between collaborative sessions on Google Docs for that latest paper, comittee minutes, or tenure application letter.

Career planning and personal management is a significant issue in any job, but clearly academia has a few extra steps, hiccups, issues, whatever you would like to call them. Check back as I will bring more notes on chapters 6-14 in parts 2 and 3 over the next couple of weeks

ToxicRisk - mapping Toxic Release Inventory data

April 28, 2009 by admin · Comment

Mike from MapCruzin sent us this comment based on our December 2007 post on the MapEcos project, in order to let us know about a project he’s working on called ToxicRisk. Our comment system apparently didn’t want to play nice, so I thought I’d post Mike’s comment in full below, so that you can read more about the ToxicRisk mapping project and the US Toxic Release Inventory:

“Two weeks ago we launched ToxicRisk. It is based on Google Maps, as is
MapEcos, but uses the most recent Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) 2007 data
released March 19, 2009 by EPA rather than older 2005 data. We wanted to
make the maps as easy to use and fast as possible so my son Aran did all of
the program in house. He has released some of this programming to the
public domain and you can access it at CPAN.

A little background: I began working with Toxic Release Inventory
data and GIS mapping
doing environmental justice research as an
undergrad and then graduate student at the University of California. Over
those years my son, Aran Deltac who has extensive programming experience,
and I developed the first U.S. based interactive pollution maps on the
internet. It was small and simple and only covered my home county, Santa
Cruz, CA, but it caught the attention of the Environmental Defense Fund. We
were hired by EDF to do the maps for their very popular Scorecard Project.

Given EPA’s current emphasis on toxics and schools, we added schools
to the maps and calculated how many schools are within 1 mile and 5 miles
of each school. As you zoom into an area the facilities are hittable
showing the school data and a link to RTK Net for facility
report.

We are working now to do the reporting similar to what we have done for
the EPA Risk Management Plans
(RMP) and link the chemicals in our reports to Scorecard.org for
comprehensive information about the toxic a facility has released in our
neighborhoods and communities.

There are over 80,000 chemicals in use in the U.S. and the TRI data
accounts for less than 1% of these. There is little data available for most
of these, but we will add as much as we can. Over the next weeks we are
adding demographics, hazardous waste, water pollution and superfund data to
the maps. We are dedicated to bringing available toxic, environmental, and
demographic data to citizens in easily digestible formats so that they can
use this information to improve conditions where they live, work and play.
ToxicRisk is a work-in-progress and we look
forward to your comments, suggestions and critque.”
